Cigarette Lighter Stops Working When Charging Things
By Jc Castillo
Recently when using a cigarette lighter to charge my phone just like a lot of people do, I began to have problems. Every time I plugged in the charger, my CD player and radio would go out and stop working permanently. Whats the problem? First I investigated to see if it was a fuse and it certainly was. Since I was driving a 2004 Toyota Corolla, the fuse box was directly under the driver steering column. A difficult place to reach, but nonetheless accessible. The first step to checking for a broken fuse is to begin pulling them out one by one and looking for a break in the thin metal inside the plastic casing. Once you take the broken fuse out you will want to find a similar one with the same value. Make sure to buy more than one, since the problem could come back again. The problem did come back for me, and as soon as I went to charge my phone again the fuse popped and everything stopped working. This lead me to believe 2 things. There was some type of wire touching somewhere it shouldn't where I couldn't see, or the charger was bad and was causing the problem. I tested the problem by first getting another device after I replaced the fuse again. The fuse did not pop this time, so I realized the root of the issue was not any bad wire in the car, but was the device I was using to charge my phone. So I went to the store and bought a new car charger and have not had a problem since. |

When a fuse blows, it does so because it has been subjected to a load that is higher than it is rated for. Whenever possible, test the power demand of anything you plug into a socket if the fuse blows rather than simply replacing the fuse and trying again. With colour coded motor car fuses there is no excuse for replacing a blown fuse with one of a higher value but it is surprising how many people do 'because it solves the problem'. It solves the problem but can also lead to an electrical fire as the power drain creates excessive heat and could melt the insulation on the wires.
Jc, although I do have a telephone charger, I've never had this problem and I didn't even know that there was a way that I could fix it, if I did. Now I know what may be the cause if it does happen. Thank you for writing this useful intel.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information on car cigarette lighter chargers, Jc. With so many devices available today, this can be a problem. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
